Pain Management Centers
New England Neurological Associates supports comprehensive pain management centers at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem, N.H. and at Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, Mass. These centers serve the needs of patients suffering from various persistent painful disorders. Pain is a diverse, multidimensional problem, as varied as the individuals who suffer from pain.
Pain management programs are designed to meet the physical, psychosocial and vocational needs of the patients they serve. This physician-directed service uses a multidisciplinary approach to address the various issues associated with pain. The ultimate goal is to increase function and diminish pain and its influence over daily activities. Each patient is encouraged to assume maximal individual responsibility for their own well-being.
Jeffery Norton, M.D., provides services at the Northeast Pain Center, and Gopala Dwarakanath, M.D., DABPM, FFARCS, Medical Director, provides services at the Lowell General Pain Center. Shihab U. Ahmed, M.D. provides services at both the Northeast Pain Center and the Lowell General Pain Center. Each of these NENA physicians have specialized education and specific training in comprehensive and interventional pain management. In each site, nurses specializing in pain management also assist in administering care. A full variety of services, including comprehensive evaluation, pharmacologic management, interventional and procedural treatments, and multidisciplinary treatment are provided in these state of the art facilities.
The standards and practice guidelines of the American Pain Society (APS), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA), the American Society for Regional Anesthesia (ASRA), American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM), and the American Society of Pain Management Nurses (ASPM) are utilized as practice resources and guidelines.
