New England Neurological Associates (NENA) has developed a Comprehensive Spine Center dedicated to the wide-ranging needs of patients with back disorders. The philosophy of the NENA Spine Center is to provide well-coordinated, comprehensive solutions within a conservative care model focused on an individual patient's needs and the goal of achieving optimal outcomes. The Spine Center treats all back-related disorders, whether big or small, providing evaluation, diagnostic services, appropriate interventions, and follow-up.
This Center brings together a team of professionals in the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain medicine, psychiatry and neuropsychology, as well as sophisticated diagnostic imaging when needed. Specialist services are provided through New England Neurological Associates and affiliated organizations.
The NENA Spine Center model is conservative, with an emphasis on non-surgical approaches to neck and back problems. However, if surgery is required, Spine Center neurosurgeons have extensive training and experience in treating cases ranging from herniated discs and spinal fractures, to spinal tumors and complex spinal reconstruction for spinal disorders such as scoliosis and degenerative conditions. Specialized spinal instrumentation is used when needed for appropriate cases, such as fusions.
For patients with complex spine disorders, the Spine Center offers a number of sophisticated surgical approaches to the treatment of disc disorders and spinal instability. These include fusions from front and back, anterior lumbar interbody fusions for chronic back pain, and other procedures. Surgical techniques are aided by state of the art intraoperative imaging techniques.
In recent years we have developed a number of innovative approaches aimed at producing superior outcomes, while also adding to the comfort and rapid recovery of the patient. Examples of efforts in this direction include minimally invasive techniques and microscopic disk surgery where appropriate, outpatient disk surgery, incorporation of physiatry care and rehabilitation into a treatment plan, and integrated pain management strategies.
